Hip Hop and Education:  Strange Bedfellows?

In January 2010, the first Battle for Higher Education event will be held in Chicago.  This coordinated event is designed to highlight two integral parts of young adult life, Hip Hop and education. The Battle for Higher Education event is designed to award high school students for their talent while generating interest in their education.

Hip Hop is more often associated with gang activities, drugs and flashy cars but this stereotype is something that Half Court Entertainment Group and Above Web Media are working to dispel.  Though hip hop is a lifestyle, it does not need to be a negative one. This showcase not only gives these young performers and students an outlet for their voice but also an opportunity for a brighter future.  Auditions are open to all high school age teens, 13 – 18 who have the desire to compete and have a “C’ or better grade point average.   Since this free style Hip Hop competition will be held around the Midwest at twelve (12) college locations the participants will have the opportunity to tour the campus and speak to representatives about college life.

Winners of the various campus competitions will receive $2500 in prizes such as laptops and other school supplies.  The winner’s high school will also receive a $2500 donation.  The winner of the final Battle for Higher Education Hip Hop Extravaganza will receive a $25,000 scholarship to the school of their choice.
